A/B Testing (Email)
Comparing two versions of a cold email — subject line, body, or CTA — by sending each to a subset of prospects and measuring which performs better before rolling out the winner at scale.
Why it matters in B2B outbound
In B2B outbound, small copy changes produce outsized results. The difference between a 1% reply rate and a 3% reply rate is often a single subject line tweak or a reframed opening line. A/B testing removes guesswork by letting real prospect behavior tell you what works.
Without structured testing, most teams optimize based on gut feel or anecdote. Systematic A/B testing builds a durable feedback loop: every campaign teaches you something that makes the next one sharper. Over time, you develop a library of winning patterns specific to your market.
The compounding effect is significant. Teams that run continuous A/B tests on cold email consistently hit 2-5x better reply rates than teams that set campaigns and forget them. At scale, that difference translates directly into pipeline volume.
How it works
Split your prospect list into two equal segments — typically 100-200 contacts each for statistical validity. Send version A to one half and version B to the other, changing only one variable at a time (subject line, opening sentence, CTA, or send time). After 72 hours, compare open rates and reply rates. Promote the winner to the remaining list. Tools like Instantly and Smartlead have native A/B testing built in. For subject lines, aim for at least a 5-percentage-point difference in open rates before declaring a winner. Treat each campaign as an experiment: document the hypothesis, the result, and the learning.
